The initiative reflects coordination between government institutions in advancing digital education in Nyeri.

Kenya has begun deploying interactive smart boards and ICT equipment to public junior secondary schools in Nyeri County as part of efforts to expand digital learning across the county.

The rollout began on September 21, 2026, with 178 public junior schools receiving 65-inch interactive smart boards and accompanying ICT equipment, including dedicated laptops for teachers.

The rollout was presided over by Caroline W. Karugu, Principal Secretary for East African Community Affairs and Acting Principal Secretary for ASALs & Regional Development. The initiative reflects coordination between government institutions in advancing digital education in Nyeri.

The deployment is part of Phase II of Kenya’s Digital Literacy Programme (DLP), implemented under the Kenya Digital Economy Acceleration Project (KDEAP) with support from the World Bank. The wider initiative aims to equip all 377 public junior schools across Nyeri County.

The government said the smart boards are intended to support interactive learning when combined with digital content, teacher capacity-building and reliable connectivity. The equipment is expected to help learners develop digital competencies needed in an increasingly technology-driven economy.

John Kipchumba Tanui, Principal Secretary for the State Department of ICT and Digital Economy, said the rollout demonstrates the importance of coordinated government action in translating Kenya’s digital transformation priorities into practical outcomes for teachers and learners.

He added that the focus should remain on ensuring digital infrastructure contributes to meaningful learning outcomes, with the impact of technology measured by the opportunities it creates for young people.
