Airtel Uganda Rolls Out Starlink Satellite-to-Mobile Service
The service uses Starlink’s satellite-to-mobile constellation of 650 launched satellites to provide access to light-data applications, including WhatsApp messaging, as well as SMS.
Airtel Uganda has launched Starlink satellite-to-mobile services, allowing customers with compatible smartphones to stay connected in areas beyond the reach of conventional terrestrial mobile networks.
The launch makes Uganda the second African market where Airtel Africa has commercially introduced the service, following its rollout in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in August.
The service uses Starlink’s satellite-to-mobile constellation of 650 launched satellites to provide access to light-data applications, including WhatsApp messaging, as well as SMS. Customers do not require specialised equipment, a satellite dish or a separate device, but must have a compatible smartphone and a clear view of the sky.
The service is designed to support people and organisations operating in remote areas, including transport and logistics operators, humanitarian organisations, farmers, mining operations and communities outside the reach of existing terrestrial networks. It is also intended to provide essential communications during emergencies, natural disasters and temporary disruptions to terrestrial networks.
Eligible Airtel Uganda customers can register through the MyAirtel App for free trial access during an introductory 30-day period. After the trial, customers will be able to access Starlink Mobile through eligible Airtel Uganda data bundles.
“This partnership is transforming how connectivity is delivered across Uganda. Starlink’s advanced satellite technology complements our ongoing investments in terrestrial infrastructure and enabling customers to stay connected even when they venture beyond conventional mobile coverage.”
– Soumendra Sahu, Managing Director and CEO, Airtel Uganda
UCC Executive Director Nyombi Thembo said Airtel Uganda’s use of emerging technologies could help strengthen connectivity and address coverage gaps across the country.
“As part of Telecoms’ licensing obligations, Uganda’s mobile operators are required to achieve coverage across at least 90% of the country’s geographical area. This includes challenging terrains such as islands, mountainous regions, forests & other hard-to-reach areas. What matters now is Ugandans, wherever they are located, have access to communication services.”
– Nyombi Thembo, Executive Director, UCC
Minister of ICT and National Guidance, Hon Justine Kasule Lumumba, said the government has a responsibility to create an enabling policy environment for private-sector growth in ICT.
“As government we have a responsibility of building an enabling policy environment to support private sector growth in ICT. With Starlink Mobile’s satellite technology, it’s supporting increased productivity & connectivity of the economy. I want to take this opportunity to congratulate Airtel & Starlink for this partnership.”
– Hon Justine Kasule Lumumba, Minister, ICT and National Guidance
The Uganda launch is the latest step in Airtel Africa’s rollout of Starlink satellite-to-mobile technology across its markets. The service complements Airtel Africa’s continued investment in terrestrial network infrastructure as the group seeks to extend connectivity to more people across Africa.
