Ghana Plans 2,800 Telecom Site Builds and Upgrades Nationwide

The 2,800-site programme will cover infrastructure operated by major mobile network operators, including MTN and Telecel.

Ghana plans to construct 800 new cell sites and upgrade 2,000 existing sites nationwide within the year as part of efforts to improve telecommunications coverage and network performance. The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations,  Samuel Nartey George, announced the programme during a two-day working visit to the Volta Region.

The minister disclosed the plan during a courtesy call on Togbega Drake Tsigbe IV, Paramount Chief of Akoefe, at Akoefe Kpodzi in the Ho Central Constituency. He also inspected a newly constructed Rural Telephony Project facility at Akoefe Gadza to assess progress in extending connectivity to the community.

The 2,800-site programme will cover infrastructure operated by major mobile network operators, including MTN and Telecel. George also said the additional spectrum released over the past two years exceeded the total allocated during the preceding two decades, with the increased capacity expected to support faster internet speeds and improved network performance.

To reduce service disruptions, the minister said relevant ministries were coordinating telecommunications cable deployment with road construction projects to limit damage to fibre-optic infrastructure. He also credited traditional leaders and community representatives with helping prioritise underserved areas.

The government expects the new and upgraded facilities to begin delivering improved coverage towards the end of the year and into early 2027, expanding residents’ access to mobile connectivity and digital services.
